Lakeside hotel buildings above the water at Sun Moon Lake

Where to Stay in Nantou

Nantou is a county that rewards sleeping over. The lake before nine in the morning, the cloud sea at dawn from Cingjing and the mist on University Pond at Xitou all belong to people who stayed the night.

Where you sleep in Nantou matters more than in most places, because the county is large and the mountain roads are slow. Pick the wrong base and you will spend your holiday driving. Below are the six areas worth considering, what each is genuinely good for, and a live hotel search for each one.

The six areas worth staying in

Hotels and the waterfront promenade at Shuishe on Sun Moon Lake The obvious first choice

Shuishe & the lakefront

Shuishe is the main village on Sun Moon Lake and where most of the international-standard hotels are — several with balconies directly over the water. You get the bus terminal, the ferry pier, the widest choice of restaurants and the start of the lakeside cycling path, all within a few minutes on foot.

Good for

  • First-time visitors
  • Travelling without a car
  • Lake-view rooms
Alpine-style guesthouses on the hillside above Cingjing Farm Alpine guesthouses at 1,700 m

Cingjing

The mountain road up to Cingjing Farm is lined with guesthouses built in an enthusiastically European idiom — chalets, turrets, the lot. What matters is the position: waking above the cloud line with the Central Mountain Range in front of you is the whole point, and it is only available if you stay the night.

Good for

  • Sea-of-cloud sunrises
  • Breaking the drive to Hehuanshan
  • Escaping summer heat

Hehuanshan

Accommodation on the mountain itself is limited to a small number of lodges near the pass, and it books out well ahead — but staying up here is the only way to be in place for sunrise above the cloud sea and for the Dark Sky Park at night. Book early or stay at Cingjing and drive up before dawn.

Good for

  • Sunrise and stargazing
  • Snow trips in January and February
  • Serious mountain walkers
The town of Puli in its basin, ringed by green hills The practical base in the middle

Puli

Puli is the transport crossroads of Nantou, roughly half an hour from Sun Moon Lake and an hour below Cingjing. It is a working town rather than a resort, which means better value, real restaurants and easy access to Chung Tai Chan Monastery and Aowanda.

Good for

  • Touring the whole county by car
  • Better value than the lake
  • Longer stays

How to choose your base in Nantou

The honest answer depends on how long you have and whether you are driving. As a rule of thumb:

  • One or two nights, no car: Stay at Sun Moon Lake — Shuishe if you want convenience and restaurants, Ita Thao if you want better value and evening atmosphere. Everything you need is walkable or a short ferry ride.
  • Two or three nights, with a car: Split your stay. One or two nights at the lake, then one at Cingjing so you are in position for the cloud sea and the drive up Hehuanshan the next morning.
  • Travelling with children: Xitou and Monster Village. The forest is cool and easy to walk, the themed hotel rooms are a hit, and there is far less time in the car than a mountain itinerary.
  • Longer stays or a tighter budget: Base yourself in Puli. It is a real working town, prices are noticeably lower than the lake, and it is within an hour of almost everything in the county.
  • Chasing sunrise or snow: Hehuanshan itself, if you can get a room. There are only a handful of lodges near the pass and they book out months ahead in winter.
Book much further ahead than you think. Nantou is a domestic-holiday destination first and an international one second, which means Lunar New Year, the February cherry blossom, weekends and every national holiday sell out early — and prices at the lake can double. Midweek stays are dramatically cheaper and quieter.

Staying in Nantou: common questions

Frequently asked questions

Is it better to stay at Sun Moon Lake or in Puli?

Stay at the lake if you have one or two nights and want the early-morning water to yourself — that is the single best reason to sleep in Nantou. Stay in Puli if you are here longer, have a car, or want your money to go further; it is about 30 minutes from the lake and much cheaper.

Do I need to stay overnight at Cingjing?

If you want to see the sea of cloud, yes. It forms in the valleys before dawn and has usually burned off by mid-morning, which is exactly when day-trippers from Taichung arrive. Staying also breaks up the drive to Hehuanshan sensibly.

How much do hotels in Nantou cost?

Rates move a lot with the calendar rather than the season — a lakeside room can be reasonable midweek and double on a holiday weekend. Rather than quote figures that go stale, we link straight through to live Trip.com prices for each area.

Are there homestays and guesthouses as well as hotels?

Plenty. Taiwan’s minsu (homestay) culture is strong in Nantou, particularly along the road up to Cingjing and around Xitou, and these are often better value and more characterful than the chain hotels. They appear in the same Trip.com searches linked here.
