Sun Moon Lake

Taiwan’s great mountain lake · Sun Moon Lake & around

Sun Moon Lake is the one place in Nantou that everybody has heard of, and for once the reputation is deserved. It is the largest body of fresh water in Taiwan — roughly 8 km², sitting at 748 m in a bowl of forested hills — and it manages to be genuinely beautiful on a grey day as well as a bright one, which is not true of every famous lake.

The name comes from its shape: the eastern half was once round like the sun, the western half curved like a crescent moon, divided by the small sacred island the Thao people call Lalu. A Japanese-era hydroelectric scheme raised the water level in the 1930s and blurred those outlines, but the name stuck and the island is still there, now much reduced and off-limits to visitors.

What makes the lake work as a destination is that there is a proper structure to a visit. A ropeway climbs the ridge for the aerial view, a public ferry links the three main villages, a 30 km cycling path runs around the shore, and a ring road connects a chain of temples, viewpoints and trailheads. You can see the highlights in a long day, but two nights is when it starts to feel like a holiday.

Top things to do at Sun Moon Lake

Ride the ropeway at opening time

The 1.9 km gondola from Ita Thao climbs to 1,044 m and delivers the view that sells the lake — the whole basin, the islands and the ridgelines behind. Go when it opens: the queue is short and the morning haze usually has not built up yet.

Take the ferry, not the bus

The public boat between Shuishe, Xuanguang and Ita Thao is both transport and sightseeing, and a day pass costs a fraction of a private charter. Xuanguang Temple pier is the stop for the famous tea eggs and the short climb to the Xuanzang Temple viewpoint.

Cycle the northwestern shore

The section from Shuishe to Xiangshan is the stretch CNN singled out — a dedicated path that runs low over the water on boardwalks, with the Xiangshan Visitor Center, a striking piece of curved concrete architecture, as the turnaround point. Roughly an hour there and back on a rented bike.

Walk the Hanbi Trail at dusk

A flat, shaded 1.5 km loop around the peninsula below the old presidential guest house, starting a two-minute walk from Shuishe pier. It is the best free thing to do at the lake and almost empty once the coaches leave.

How to get to Sun Moon Lake

  • From Taichung, the Nantou Bus and Taiwan Tourist Shuttle run frequently from both Taichung HSR station and the city centre, taking about 90 minutes to Shuishe. This is the standard route and the one most independent travellers use.
  • From Taipei, allow three to four hours each way by public transport — HSR to Taichung, then bus. A guided day tour or a private transfer removes the connection risk and is worth considering if you only have one day.
  • Driving is straightforward via Provincial Highway 21, but parking at Shuishe and Ita Thao fills up early on weekends and public holidays.
Insider tips
  • Stay overnight if you possibly can. The lake is at its best before 09:00 and after 16:00, and day-trippers see neither.
  • Buy the ropeway–boat–bike combo ticket online in advance rather than queuing separately at three counters.
  • The ring road is popular with cyclists but has tunnels and no shoulder in places — the dedicated lakeside path is the safer and prettier ride.
  • Weekday visits are dramatically quieter. Avoid Lunar New Year, Tomb Sweeping and the mid-Autumn long weekends unless you enjoy crowds.

Sun Moon Lake: Classic Tour with Sky & Lake

The most complete single day at Sun Moon Lake, designed for people already staying in the area who want everything organised. "Sky" is the ropeway that lifts you over the ridge for the full panorama; "Lake" is the boat that carries you between Shuishe, Lalu Island and Ita Thao. Sun Moon Lake FAQs

Frequently asked questions

How long should I spend at Sun Moon Lake?

One full day covers the ropeway, a boat trip and one short walk. Two nights lets you add the cycling path, the temples on the north shore and a sunrise, and is what we recommend if the lake is your main reason for coming to Nantou.

Can you swim in Sun Moon Lake?

Not ordinarily — swimming is prohibited because the lake is a reservoir. The single exception is the Sun Moon Lake International Swimming Carnival each September, when around 20,000 people cross the lake together. Paddleboarding and kayaking are permitted year-round.

Is the ropeway worth it if the weather is cloudy?

Often yes — cloud sitting below the ridge is a spectacle in its own right, and the gondola frequently rises above it. In heavy rain or high wind the ropeway closes, so check before making the trip up to Ita Thao.
