Bare alpine ridges and grassland on Hehuanshan under a clear sky

Hehuanshan

The peak you can drive to · High mountains

Hehuanshan is the most accessible high mountain in Taiwan, and that single fact explains why it is worth the drive. Provincial Highway 14A tops out at Wuling at 3,275 m — the highest road pass in East Asia — which means genuine alpine terrain is available to anyone with a vehicle rather than only to people prepared to carry a pack for two days.

The mountain sits on the border of Nantou and Hualien counties within Taroko National Park. Above the treeline the slopes are covered in dwarf bamboo and Yushan juniper, several peaks over 3,400 m are reachable on marked trails in under two hours, and in January and February it is one of the few places in Taiwan where snow settles.

In 2019 the area was certified as an International Dark Sky Park, the first in Taiwan. On a clear, moonless night the Milky Way is visible to the naked eye in a way that is genuinely rare anywhere in East Asia.

Top things to do at Hehuanshan

Climb Shimen Mountain

The easiest of the high peaks: a well-made 800 m trail from the roadside that gains about 100 m and reaches 3,237 m. Half an hour up, and the payoff is a 360-degree view over the whole ridge system.

Watch the sunrise from Wuling

The pass is high enough that you are usually above the cloud layer at dawn. It is bitterly cold and unquestionably worth it — this is the view that fills Taiwanese photographers’ portfolios.

Stargaze in the Dark Sky Park

Kunyang, Wuling and Hehuan Mountain Villa are the designated viewing points. Bring far more clothing than you think you need and check the moon phase before planning the night.

How to get to Hehuanshan

  • By road from Cingjing it is about an hour of continuous climbing on Highway 14A. This is the standard approach and the only practical one from the Nantou side.
  • Public transport is limited: the Taiwan Tourist Shuttle runs a seasonal Hehuanshan line from Cingjing, but services are sparse and weather-dependent.
  • A private tour or hired driver from Taichung or Cingjing is the usual solution for travellers without a car.
Insider tips
  • Altitude is real. 3,275 m affects people, so ascend gradually — ideally sleeping at Cingjing first — and go slowly on the trails.
  • Temperatures can be 15°C below the lowlands and the wind is severe. Bring a proper jacket, hat and gloves in any season.
  • Check road conditions before setting off. Highway 14A closes for snow, ice and typhoon damage, sometimes at short notice.
  • Fuel up in Puli or Cingjing — there are no petrol stations on the mountain.

Nantou: Cingjing Skywalk Ticket with Optional Attractions

At barely the price of a coffee this is the best-value ticket in Nantou, and the easiest way to understand why people call this the roof of central Taiwan. The Cingjing Skywalk is a 1.2 km elevated timber-and-steel boardwalk running along the mountainside at around 1,700 m, suspended high enough above the slope that you walk level with the treetops and look straight down the valley toward Puli. It is completely step-free, takes about an hour at a gentle pace, and is at its best in the early morning when cloud is still pooled in the valleys below.

  • Walk the 1.2 km elevated boardwalk — the highest of its kind in Taiwan
  • Suspended up to 70 m above the hillside with uninterrupted valley views
  • Barrier-free the whole way, so it suits every fitness level

Taichung: Qingjing Farm, Skywalk and Swiss Garden Tour

Getting to Cingjing under your own steam means a two-hour climb up Provincial Highway 14 with more than a thousand metres of ascent and a lot of hairpins — not everyone’s idea of a holiday. This private tour removes that entirely. A driver-guide collects you in Taichung and handles the mountain road while you take in the scenery, then you work through the three headline sights: the sheep meadows of the Green Green Grassland, the elevated Skywalk, and the alpine-flower terraces of the Swiss Garden. Because it is private you can linger where you like.

Hehuanshan FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Can you really drive to the top of Hehuanshan?

You can drive to Wuling at 3,275 m, which is a pass rather than a summit. From there several peaks over 3,400 m are reachable on short marked trails; Shimen Mountain takes about half an hour.

When does it snow on Hehuanshan?

Snow is most likely in January and February, occasionally into March. When it settles the road is often closed or restricted to vehicles with chains, and traffic from the lowlands can be extreme.

Do I need a permit?

No permit is needed for the roadside areas or the short peak trails such as Shimen and Hehuan Main Peak. Longer routes deeper into the national park do require permits.
