Wenwu Temple sits on the northern shore, high enough above the water that its terrace gives what is probably the finest free view of Sun Moon Lake anywhere. It is a big, confident, almost theatrical building in northern-Chinese palace style, guarded by two of the largest stone lions in Taiwan.
The temple exists in its current form because of the dam. When the water level rose in the 1930s, two older lakeside temples were flooded, and their deities were combined into a single new temple built higher up the slope. "Wenwu" means literary and martial: Confucius occupies the rear hall, while Guan Yu, the deified general, holds the front. It is an unusual pairing and a very Taiwanese solution.
Top things to do at Wenwu Temple
Stand on the front terrace
The view down over the whole lake is the reason most people come, and it costs nothing. Late afternoon light is the best, with the ridges behind the water going blue in layers.
Climb the Year Steps
A staircase of 366 steps descends from the temple toward the lake, one for each day of a leap year, hung with wind chimes that visitors inscribe with wishes. Walking down and back up is a solid twenty minutes and much quieter than the temple forecourt.
Look properly at the roofline
The ceramic dragons, phoenixes and figures along the ridges are worth more than a passing glance — this is showpiece southern-Fujianese craftsmanship applied to a northern-palace form.
How to get to Wenwu Temple
- Round-the-lake buses stop directly outside; it is about 10 minutes from Shuishe by road.
- By bicycle it is a stiff climb from the lakeside path — most cyclists take the bus or a scooter up and save their legs for the flat northwestern shore.
- Entry is free, and the temple opens from early morning until evening.
- It is on the ring road rather than the ferry route, so build it into a bus, car or scooter loop rather than a boat day.
- Dress is relaxed but this is an active place of worship — keep to the marked visitor areas during ceremonies.
Best tours & tickets for Wenwu Temple
These top-rated experiences are the easiest way to enjoy Wenwu Temple and its surroundings:
Guided tour with meal from $109 Sun Moon Lake: Classic Tour with Sky & Lake
The most complete single day at Sun Moon Lake, designed for people already staying in the area who want everything organised. "Sky" is the ropeway that lifts you over the ridge for the full panorama; "Lake" is the boat that carries you between Shuishe, Lalu Island and Ita Thao. A meal is included and a guide ties the day together — the Thao village, the temples on the northern shore, and the trails that most day-trippers never find. Pricier than a bare ticket, but you finish the day having actually seen the lake rather than chased it.
- Both halves of the lake experience — the ropeway above and the boat below
- Lunch included, so no hunting for a table in peak season
- Hotel or pier pickup around the Sun Moon Lake area
Private day tour from $350 per group From Taipei or Taichung: Sun Moon Lake Day Trip & Boat Ride
A well-judged private itinerary that pairs the lake with the two things most day tours skip: the Hanbi Trail, a short shaded lakeside walk out to the peninsula below the old presidential guest house, and Chung Tai Chan Monastery in Puli — a 150 m tower of granite and glass that is one of the most striking religious buildings anywhere in Asia. Because it is a private vehicle for your group alone, you can start early to beat the coaches to the water and adjust the plan on the day. Priced per group, so it gets sharper the more of you there are.
- Private car and driver-guide from either Taipei or Taichung
- Boat ride on the lake plus a walk on the lakeside Hanbi Trail
- Chung Tai Chan Monastery, one of the great modern temples of Asia
